2008년 신진작가공모전 심사가 마무리 되었습니다.

총 120여명의 작가(팀)이 신진작가공모에 참여해주셨고, 그 중 두 분이 당선되었습니다.

루프 신진작가 공모전 총평

지난해부터 대안공간 루프 신진작가 공모전의 심사위원으로 참여하면서 나는 2007년에 비해 2008년 공모자들의 수준이 굉장히 향상되었음을 느꼈다. 많은 공모자들 중에서 누군가를 선택을 한다는 것, 다른 심사위원들과 함께 서로 의견은 교환하면서 그것을 통합하는 것도 힘든 일이었지만 대단히 흥미로운 일이었음에 틀림없다. 심사 초반, 각 심사위원들의 의견은 굉장히 다양했다.

점차 우리는 서로의 의견을 반영하면서 동시대 미술의 현 상황에 대한 척도를 찾아 이에 맞는 작가를 선별해냈다. 모든 공모자의 포트폴리오를 검토하면서, 나는 일본의 작가들에 비해 한국의 작가들이 동시대 미술의 국제적 기준에 더 잘 대처하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 현상은 아마도 한국의 작가들이 해외의 주요한 도시에서 많이 공부하고 또 결과적으로 많은 전시에 참여 혹은 관람하면서 생긴 것이라고 할 수 있겠다. 세계적인 추세에 발 맞추어 간다는 것은 매우 중요하지만 동시에 세계 화단의 지배적인 양상에 대해 모방을 가져올 수 있다. 예술은 항상 그것에 반응할 누군가를 필요로 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 예술은 한 개인에게서부터 나오는 것이다. 이러한 문맥에서 예술은 절대로 글로벌(global)한 것이 아니다.

정흥섭은 대중사회에서 우리가 접할 수 있는 일상적인 것들에 대한 시각적인 체험을 보여준다. 이러한 주제는 이전에도 많이 다루어 졌던 것이다. 그러나 일상적 물체에 대한 정흥섭의 접근방법은 물질세계에서 발생할 수 있는 무의식적 공모 혹은 음모를 폭로하고 있다는 점에서 새롭다. 또한 작가의 주관이 많이 개입된 것이 아니어서 작품은 관람객 자신의 시각적 경험에 따라 다르게 읽힐 수 있다.

이은우 또한 일상 생활의 표준화(standardization)에 대해 매우 정교한 방법으로 표현하고 있다. 마케팅(Marketing) 분야의 출현이 단지 ‘산업(Industry)’에 국한 된 것이 아닌, 우리가 지각하고 있는 모든 세상을 규제하고 있음을 보여준다. 즉 산업을 넘어, 마케팅의 개념에서 개개인에 대한 통제와 관리가 스스로에 의해 계속되고 있음은 말 할 필요도 없다. 단지 이것이 비가시적으로 진행되어왔을 뿐이다. 시각예술은 그것을 공공적으로 노출할 수 있는 하나의 방법이다. 이은우의 작품은 이를 부정적인 태도로 접근하는 것이 아닌, 우리 자신을 반영하고 어쩔 수 없이 직면하고 있는 현실에 대해서 말하고 있다.

현대사회에서 예술은 ‘실험(experiment)’할 수 있는 장소(site)이다. 따라서, 지금까지 중요하다고 간주되어 온 예술에 형태를 따를 필요가 없다. 나는 이 공모전이 젊은 작가들의 알려지진 않은 작품세계를 대중적으로 알릴 수 있는 것이 되기를 간절히 바란다.

I had participated as a jury since the first selection on last year and it seemed that the quality of each applicant has been improved very much. We found it very difficult to select so the process of exchanging our idea was a hard task but very interesting. At the beginning recommendation from each jury was dispersed. Then we had to reflect each other’s opinion to find out clear criteria for the current situation of contemporary art today.

By looking at overall application I think the young Korean artists deal with global standard of contemporary art rather than Japanese artists. This has probably been accomplished by a large effort of studying abroad and participation in the major art circuit. It is a very important step to get along with the world but at the same time it might bring a lot of copies of dominant art practice. Art always needs somebody else who reacts to it but this work comes out from a singularity of a person where there is a something not exchangeable. Therefore it can never be global in a strict sense.

Heung-sup JUNG shows our everyday visual experiences in a mass-media society. It is the theme that had been repeated previously for many times, but the way he intervenes into daily objects will reveal our unconscious conspiracy with material world. It is not a big intervention so that is open to the viewer’s different commitment with their own visual experiences.

Eunu LEE also has a sophisticated method of expressing the standardization in our daily life. The advance in the marketing is not just an issue of industry but it regulates our senses to recognize the world. Management and control over individuals has been strengthened in a more invisible way. Visual art is one of the ways to expose it to the public. It is not a way of accusing but to reflect on ourselves and confront with inevitable contradiction.

The art is a site for experiment in the society. There is no need to follow the form of what has been regarded as important art. I strongly hope this competition will opens a public sphere for unknown practices by young artists.
