기술문명 시대에 자연이 진부한 주제로 인식되어 소외되고 방치되어 온 것처럼 회화 역시 미디어 아트가 범람하는 현대미술 흐름 안에서 부유하고 있는 듯하다. 하지만 동시에 회화는 자연성의 회복처럼 새로운 패러다임을 모색하고 있다. 회화는 다른 여느 장르의 예술보다 무한한 자기표현의 세계이며, 그 안에서 거침없이 자유롭고, 보는 관객들에게 여과되지 않은 내면세계를 보여준다. 

칸딘스키는 “작가의 눈은 자기 개인의 내적 세계로 뜨여 있어야 하며, 귀는 내적 필연성에 기울이고 있어야 한다. 이것이 한 작품의 기본적인 요소인 신비스러운 필연성을 표현할 수 있는 유일한 방법이다,”라고 했다. 예술에 있어 ‘보는 것‘, ‘행하는 것‘ 보다 ‘느끼는 것‘으로 존재해야 함은 모든 대상에 대한 감성적 시각을 강조하는데 지나치지 않으며, 이 말은 곧 언어로 사고하는 것이 아니라 심상으로 사고함으로써 형상화 시킬 수 있어야 하는 것이 미술의 주된 의무라는 말로 대변된다. 

멜랑꼴리한 회화작업으로 잘 알려진 샌 정(Sen Chung)은 대안공간루프에서 열리는 [first glance] 개인전을 통해 20여 점의 회화작업과 한쪽 벽면에 벽화작업을 선보인다. 이번 전시에서는 낯선 곳, 낯선 시선, 낯선 상황에서의 느낌을 방문자에게 모호하게 이야기 한다. 작품에 등장하는 감정을 알 수 없는 여성은 화면 안에서 관람자에게 섬세한 주관적 해석을 요구한다. 동시에 우리의 내면에 잠재해 잇는 원초성을 자극하며, 이러한 자극은 다시 보는 이들에게 폭넓은 감상의 범위를 제공한다. 

그의 서정적이고 함축적인 심상의 이미지는 샌 정만의 작품가치 창조의 중요한 근원이라고 할 수 있다. 디지털 시대에 반(反)하는 작업이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 감성적이고 음유적인 색감의 화면은 마치 19세기 서정적인 회화의 흐름을 연상케 한다. 수채화의 느낌을 닮은 샌 정의 작품은 계산되지 않아 불안정해 보이는 시점과 구도와는 별개로 자연스러운 느낌을 담고 있다. 이는 자연을 모태로 얻어진 서정적인 휴머니즘이 작가의 내면을 통해 형상화 되어 작품에 드러나기 때문이다. 하지만 작가는 작품을 통해 자신을 숨기고, 관찰자의 입장으로 돌아가 그림을 보는 이들에게 주관적인 해석을 요구한다. 

샌 정은 1987년 홍익대학교 서양화과를 졸업하고 재독하여 2001년 쿤스트아카데미 뒤셀도르프와 2006년 파인아트 첼시 컬리지 오브 아트 & 디자인 학교를 졸업하였다. 현재 독일 뒤셀도르프에 거주하며 국내외로 작품활동을 활발히 하고 있다.

Just like the nature has been recognized as a banal theme in technological civilization and thus been alienated and neglected, paintings also seem to drift in the current of modern art which is inundated with media art. However, at the same time, paintings are seeking a new paradigm like the nature recovers itself. The painting is the world of infinite self-expression, compared to any other genre of art, and it shows a free and unfiltered internal world to the audience. 

Kandinsky said “The artist’s open eyes must be directed to his inner life and his ears must be constantly attuned to the voice of inner necessity. That is the only way we can express the mystic necessity, the basic element in an artwork.” In art, the need to exist by ‘feeling’ rather than ‘seeing’ and ‘performing’ cannot overemphasize viewing every object emotionally. This leads to the saying that it is art’s major duty to be able to formulate by thinking not with language but with image. 

Sen Chung, renowned for melancholy paintings, releases 20 paintings or so and a wall painting in his exhibition [first glance] in Alternative Space Loop. In this exhibition, he tells vaguely about his feelings at unfamiliar places, of unfamiliar gaze, and in unfamiliar situations to audience. The woman appearing in the works, whose feelings are incomprehensible, in the screen, calls for the audience’s delicate subjective interpretation. At the same time, she stimulates our primitiveness latent in our inside and this stimulus provides a wide range of appreciation to audience. 

His lyrical and implicit mental images can be regarded as the important root of Sen Chung’s unique creation of work value. His screen consisting of emotional and troubadour troubadour-like sense of color reminds of the current of the 19^th century lyrical painting. His works resemble the feeling of watercolor painting. They embrace a natural feeling, different from the visual point and composition which seems instable due to the absence of elaborate calculation. This maybe because lyrical humanism, gained from the matrix of nature, is reflected in works, formulated through the artist’s inside. However, the artist conceals himself through works and returns to the position of an observer, calling for the audience’s subjective interpretation. 

Sen Chung graduated from Dept. of Western Painting, Hongik University, in 1987. He then moved to Germany and graduated from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2001 and Fine Art, College of Art & Design in 2006. He now resides in Düsseldorf and leads his career as an artist home and abroad.
